Canzibe is a 140-bedded deep rural hospital located in the Transkei region of the Eastern Cape. It is a level-one district hospital serving the Ngqeleni area, with a drainage population of about 143 000. Patients are referred from eleven surrounding clinics and general practitioners in the area. Up-referral is to Nelson Mandela and Umtata General Hospitals.
Canzibe serves both in- and out-patients. There are five main wards: adult general, maternity/gynaecology, paediatrics, TB and short-stay. The out-patients department is run daily and serves as a casualty after hours. Emergency surgery and minor procedures are performed in the hospital’s theatres There is an onsite NHLS laboratory, as well as an x-ray department and dispensary, as well as an ARV unit.
Currently four permanent doctors are working at Canzibe. Opportunities for learning at the hospital are related to the relatively resource-constrained setting and difficulty in patient referral, which necessitates a focus on clinical skills (rather than special investigations) and independent clinical decision making.
The local Xhosa community is a traditional one. People make their homes on plots of land allocated to them by the local chief or headman, in the form of homesteads typically comprised of multiple small huts and houses, corn fields and cattle kraals. Basic amenities such as running water, electricity and sanitation are either lacking or severely limited. Poverty and lack of infrastructure, economy and education results in the ‘double-burden’ of disease, with HIV and TB predominating (as is the case generally in South Africa).
The hospital is located about an hour from Umtata (partially along a dirt road), and about 40 minutes from the coastline where one can spend weekends at backpackers or self-catering cottages. Accommodation is provided on the hospital grounds. The village of Canzibe itself is limited; but a small supermarket provides basic groceries and hardware.

I visited this area 2 years ago I found it stunningly beautiful. But also terrible poor where transport other than taxis does not exist.I only speak a few words of Xhosa so found it hard to communicate with people I gave lifts to.I remember a very lovely school girl who I drove to school one day telling me she walked 10km to school each day & some of her friends walk even further sadly I expect she still has to walk.To the people who are trying to improve the lives of the people I have the greatest respect keep going because every little helps.

I moved to this area in January with my family on work purposes, I can say the people are very friend and welcoming, as for the hospital it does need an upgrade, and the area as a whole. Everytime I see young kids walk long distances to school my hearts jst bleeds. Hoping that one this will be sorted out
I come from the same district of Ngqeleni. The last time I visited Canzibe/Nomadolo area is probably in the mid 80’s. I visit Malungeni Village once a year and I still find it very strange that the route to Canzibe, off ramping from Cop-Shop, is not tarred at all. I most of the times wonder as to how an ambulance drives from Canzibe to Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital over the dirt gravel road which is about 50km. At the same time there is coastal area which if the road is tarred, can bring of a lot of revenue for locals!!!!!!
I was born in Ngqeleni and left for Jozi though occasionally comes back home . It hurts me a lot to live in Jozi while there is a lot work that needs bright young minds like mine at home . Hospitals like Canzibe should be a platform and means of communicating with our population about the dangers and emergence of some diseases but alas unlike here in Jozi they lack the resources even people like me who would be able to engage and educate the people in general are not utilised . Tourism can be a booming business with lots and lots of nature and Ocean nearby if only our leaders can improve the infrastructure all can change for the better .

Canzibe Hospital is located in Nomadolo villege where my home is. My father is currently working there. It’s true the area is poor. Currently I am a pastor for the Pentecostal Upperhall of SA. We come across these challenges where we need to first look at their social needs when we preach the Gospel. Any assistance can make a huge difference.
